Mastering for release

The last step before upload: tonal balance, stereo image and loudness that hold up on streaming, download and earbuds — without squashing the life out of your mix.

Mastering engineer listening critically between monitors.

Mastering is not a second mix. You send a stereo mix that already balances level and dynamics; we listen in a quiet suite in Amsterdam, with monitors and outboard meant for critical listening. Culticlayer masters for independents, labels and artists who mix themselves or used our Mixing — the deliverable is a release master with agreed loudness and peak limits.

The service fits singles, EPs and albums up to twelve tracks on the album rate. Podcast or talk audio follows different norms under Talk and podcast recording. Read loudness for streaming for targets; this page covers process, delivery, revisions and limits.

How it works

  1. 01

    Deliver

Upload stereo WAV (24-bit recommended), track list and any references to [email protected]. State your distributor and desired formats. We confirm price and turnaround within 3 business days.

  2. 02

    Intake

The engineer checks headroom, clicks and silence at start and end. On albums we align order and gaps; inconsistent mixes between tracks are discussed before we start.

  3. 03

    Master

EQ, dynamics, stereo and limiting with streaming normalisation in mind — not chasing a random LUFS number on a plugin. True peak stays safe for lossy encoders.

  4. 04

    Revision and delivery

You receive masters to check at home. Revision rounds follow your quote and terms and conditions; then final WAV (and optional other formats). Archive 18 months.

When mastering helps

Your mix sounds strong on studio monitors but thin on a phone, or chorus and verse do not sit on one loudness line. Mastering evens that last layer across the song — and across an album. Demos or rough mixes with structural issues go back to mix or tracking; we do not fix missing bass or misplaced vocals.

Live band material from our Live band recording or vocals from Vocal recording often benefits once bleed and mix are done.

Who does the work

Mastering runs through our mix and mastering engineers, including Daan Prins. Lars Hendriks coordinates scheduling as studio manager. You have one contact per project — not an anonymous online queue.

Delivery rules

  • Stereo WAV, preferably 24-bit; no MP3 as source
  • Mix with 3–6 dB headroom; no heavy limiter on the mix bus
  • Silence at start and end for clean metadata and fades
  • Per track: title, ISRC if you have it, explicit flag if needed
  • Albums: order and desired crossfades or gaps in seconds

Unsure about stems? Mastering is stereo-in; multitrack belongs to mixing. See delivering stems if mixing happens elsewhere.

Loudness and platforms

Streaming services normalise to catalogue level — mastering too hot sounds smaller after gain-riding. We aim for translation on varied speakers, with integrated loudness near common streaming targets and true peak well below 0 dBFS for AAC and Ogg.

Revision and feedback

Mastering at Culticlayer includes revision as stated on this service and confirmed in your quote; further rounds follow terms and conditions and 2 where that applies to mix/master. Give concrete notes: “slightly more air in the chorus”, “less wide bass on phone” — not vague “make it warmer” without a reference.

One reference track at a similar loudness level helps; we do not clone another artist, we calibrate expectations.

Delivery and turnaround

By default we deliver 16-bit/44.1 kHz WAV for wide distribution plus 24-bit for archive. Other specs (instrumental, MFiT prep) on request via contact. Typical turnaround: a few business days per track after complete delivery; albums are scheduled in blocks for consistency.

Files via download link; keep your own copies. Studio archive 18 months — then we delete projects unless agreed otherwise.

Pricing and VAT

Mastering is billed per track or per album up to twelve tracks. Consumer prices including 21% VAT are in the price block; business net: €56.20 and €429.75.

Rush at a surcharge only when the calendar allows. Deposit 25% may apply on larger album projects per quote. Cancellation before work starts follows terms and the 5-day rule where relevant.

What is not included

Mixing, tuning, vocal editing, sample clearance, artwork, distributor upload and marketing sit outside mastering. DRM or exclusive physical formats are quoted separately. If your source clips or has digital errors, we report it — repair is not standard.

Rights: you keep your composition; our deliverable is a processed copy per your brief. More legal context in legal notice and disclaimer.

After mastering: live and promo

If you use masters for video or radio, test on that chain — not only earbuds. Band promo with live sound starts at Live band recording; mastering is final polish, not the first capture.

FAQ

Should my mix already sound mastered?

No, but it should be stable without a bus limiter that already flattens everything. Headroom and no clipping on the mix bus give us space. Unsure? Send a snippet to check before you pay for the full album.

How many revisions are included?

Revision is included as stated on this service and in your quote; further rounds follow terms and the count on your quote (up to 2 where mix/master uses that).

Can I master one track as a trial?

Yes, at €68 per track. Album pricing applies at €520 when you deliver up to twelve tracks in one project.

Do you master Dolby Atmos?

Our standard service is stereo release master. Immersive formats are discussed on contact — often with other vendors or a custom quote.

What if my distributor demands different specs?

Send the written requirement at intake. We align when feasible within mastering; sometimes it needs an alternate export or second master variant at extra cost.
